It supplied fresh water to its local neighbours up the hill and manufactured and supplied its famous glass and bricks to a wide number of national customers. The town’s prosperity was such it boasted no less than four department stores along its High Street for the working population. One of the buildings which housed a department store is still intact and has been home to The Slade Centre for nearly 25 years. Built by the Slade Brothers it has suffered several incarnations since; electrical appliance store, empty for a decade, accountants, restaurant, a bar to its current iteration as a contemporary art gallery. To celebrate the history of the building and of Gillingham itself, artist Jonny Hannah has been invited to employ his unique style to recreate the feeling of the buildings original purpose. With a wide range of objects, drawing, prints and even clothes Jonny has immersed himself into the history of the building and is converting it into something exciting, accessible and relevant. A dynamic, fun, respectful nod to our history delivered in a quirky, contemporary style. Glen Innes 11 October - 15 November: The Slade Centre, GILLINGHAM, SP8 4AY.
