SOMERSET OPEN STUDIOS 2025 • 3 13 - 28 September In East Quantoxhead are two intriguing artists HAZEL BARRON and DUNCAN SALISBURY (venue 94). Hazel is a recent graduate working with foraged materials and cast glass, inspired by the connection between landscape and human frailty. Duncan works in both photography and ceramics and is inspired by deep connections to the coastline. Bridgwater’s newly refurbished Arts Centre (venue 103) hosts MARKO DUTKA’s PhD photographic exhibition. The images of the Severn Estuary construct an immersive, visual language about a magical, multi-layered environment where everything is connected, in fi nitely variable and always in fl ux. Also in Bridgwater is NATHAN SLATE ATELIER (venue 104). Nathan is an international artist now based in Somerset, with fashion collections worn by Rihanna and Lady Gaga. Working to a natural and sustainable ethic, he creates textiles using the rain and ceramics from local clay. His jewellery is designed using crystals and inspired by nature. LILY SAWTELL (venue 112) looks at the alchemy between clay and kiln, testing her hand building skills. There are also drawings, sculptures and prints on show, all with a stunning Somerset view. At Glastonbury’s ZIG ZAG BUILDING (venue 114) you can fi nd this year’s Somerset Art Works Bursary Artists. The Creative Pathways Bursary is a professional development programme that aims to provide tailor-made support and a ‘head-start’ for early stage artists and makers. Each year SAW works closely with four new applicants to develop their practice through mentoring, peer guidance and fi nancial support. A great venue to spot new and emerging talent. HEART OF THE TRIBE GALLERY (venue 119) is another superb creative hub in Glastonbury. Here you’ll be able to see artists at work and have the chance to have your portrait taken by award winning photographer KIM VON COELS. ELIZABETH RAEBURN and RODNEY LAWRENCE (venue 123) exhibit from their pottery established in 1976. Their work in raku and stoneware is represented in museums and collections worldwide, some sculptural, some useful, sometimes humorous. Award winning artist SHELLEY DYER- GIBBINS (venue 127) shows her blend of mixed media work using linocut, LEDs, spray paint, collage and acrylic to create a retro pop art twist. DAVID A PARFITT and JANETTE KERR (venue 143) showcase encounters with land and sea. Searching out their place in the world, following trails and hunches, sometimes lost but always on the way. Their venue offers painting, print, drawing, sketchbooks and conversation. As ever we have only been able to give you a tiny taste of what’s on offer, but encourage you to get out and see as much as you can.
